Description

Monopotassium phosphate, MKP, (also potassium dihydrogen phosphate, KDP, or monobasic potassium phosphate), KH2PO4, is a soluble salt of potassium and the dihydrogen phosphate ion which is used as a fertilizer, a food additive, and a fungicide. It is a source of phosphorus and potassium. It is also a buffering agent. When used in fertilizer mixtures with urea and ammonium phosphates, it minimizes the escape of ammonia by keeping the pH at a relatively low level.

Applications of Monopotassium phosphate:

1. Agriculture & Fertilizer Industry

  • Premium Phosphorus & Potassium Source: Used in fertilizers to promote root development and flowering.
  • Hydroponics & Greenhouse Cultivation: Provides balanced nutrition in controlled environments.
  • Foliar Fertilizer: Enhances nutrient uptake and crop yield.
  • Drip Irrigation & Soil Application: Improves nutrient absorption and soil health.

2. Food & Beverage Industry

  • Food-Grade Additive: Used as a buffering agent and pH regulator.
  • Beverage & Dairy Processing: Maintains stability in food formulations.
  • Preservative & Emulsifier: Enhances texture and shelf-life of processed foods.

3. Pharmaceutical & Medical Applications

  • Nutritional Supplements: Provides essential phosphate and potassium for metabolic processes.
  • Electrolyte Replenishment: Used in medical formulations and IV fluids.
  • Laboratory Reagent: Utilized in pharmaceutical testing and research.

4. Industrial & Chemical Applications

  • Buffering Agent: Maintains pH stability in chemical formulations.
  • Water Treatment & Purification: Used in phosphate-based treatments.
  • Detergents & Cleaning Products: Enhances stability in cleaning formulations.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.
  • Keep in sealed containers to prevent moisture absorption.
  • Avoid exposure to strong acids and bases.

Handling

  • Use protective gloves, safety goggles, and a dust mask when handling.
  • Prevent direct skin and eye contact.
  • Store away from oxidizing agents and incompatible substances.

Safety

  • Non-toxic and non-flammable but may cause mild irritation to skin and eyes.
  • Avoid inhalation of dust; use in a well-ventilated area.
  • Follow OSHA, EPA, and industry safety regulations.
  • Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) available upon request.
